Spinal Rehab and Sports Therapy
What is Spinal Rehab? The human spine devoid of its musculature is inherently unstable. Therefore our muscles play an important role in the stabilisation of our spine. Upper, mid and low back disorders are commonly associated with poor posture and everyday movements patterns secondary to weak, lengthened, overactive or shortened muscles. Low back pain sufferers often demonstrate poor posture and decreased lumbar spine stability.
Spinal rehabilitation is a treatment therapy which primarily focuses on stabilisation of the spine alongside functional movement, and is performed by sports therapists within our clinic. The treatment incorporates core stability training, utilising body control and awareness through neutral spinal alignment, accurate breathing patterns within movement and the strengthening of spinal stabilisers such as the multifidis, transverse abdominis and the pelvic floor musculature. Our approach is to isolate and re establish function of the stabilising muscles, progressing to controlled movements of the lumbar spine and pelvic girdle and finally maintaining stability of the spine with high speed motion and functional activities.
The benefits of spinal rehabilitation include injury cure and prevention from conditions such as non specific back pain and vertebral disk related injuries. In addition, our patients will also benefit from an improved postural muscle endurance capacity and an improved efficiency of functional movement within their daily life.
What is Clinical Sports Therapy?
Sports therapy is a specialised sector of health care that deals with the cure and prevention of injuries and patient rehabilitation, returning individuals to optimal levels of functional occupation and specific fitness.
Management of injuries within the Hampstead Chiropractic Clinic are conducted by our Sports Therapists, where treatment plans are formulated specifically to the patient’s injury requirements. Treatments may include specific soft tissue manipulations (sports massage, deep friction massage and myofascial release), joint mobilisation, cryotherapy, heat therapy, electrotherapy and/or remedial exercise. Mobilisations are of benefit to our patients as they help restore normal ranges of motion and decrease pain within a joint post injury. Techniques such as deep friction and myofascial release help to treat scar tissue, muscular adhesions, rebuild the soft tissues and restore balance to the musculo-skeletal system.
In addition to treating the symptoms the sports therapist also looks at the root causes of each particular injury. Subsequently, a variety of rehabilitation exercises will be prescribed to improve muscular/joint strength, proprioception (balance and coordination), posture and muscle imbalance, in order to reduce the likelihood of the injury and maximise the patient's lifestyle function.

Testimonials
I took my baby Holly, to the clinic, as after a long and difficult birth, she had a noticeably misshaped head. My friend recommended I tried Chiropractic treatment as it had helped her son. After much reassurance from the Chiropractors, Holly had a few treatments over 2 months, and now she is a healthy happy child, with a lovely shaped head! The staff were very friendly and helped keep my older son amused too.
